Nutrient rich food is very important to our good health. When you tamper with mother nature and start modifying the genetic DNA make-up of our food…it could translate into health issues down the road….we have no long term research on this so it is anyone’s guess what these foods will do to our overall health.
Genetically modified foods are in our food supply. However, to date, very few fresh fruits and vegetables are in the U.S. Corn, perhaps zucchini and yellow crookneck squash are. Papaya from Hawaii is half gmo. When you purchase eggs, meat and fish the feed they receive could be genetically modified. Look for those that are 100% grass fed and wild rather than farmed fish. There are four big genetically modified products which can be found in so many foods. These are cottonseed, canola, soybeans and corn. In the ingredients labels you typically find the following:
Cereals and breakfast bars contain some of the below:
Corn
■ Corn flour, meal, oil, starch, gluten, and syrup
■ Sweeteners such as fructose, dextrose, and glucose
■ Modified food starch*
Soy
■ Soy flour, lecithin, protein, isolate, and isoflavone
■ Vegetable oil* and vegetable protein*
Canola Canola oil (also called rapeseed oil)
Cotton Cottonseed oil
*May be derived from other sources
In addition, GM sugar beets may soon enter the food supply.
To avoid products containing GM beet sugar, look for products
labeled as containing 100% cane sugar, evaporated cane
juice, or products made with organic sugar.
Daily products containing milk end up with genetically engineered hormone rbGH or rbST. This is given to the cows to get higher milk production.
The good news is that grains, beans and pasta on the market are just that….no GMO’s.
These are 100-percent wheat pasta, couscous, rice, quinoa, oats, barley,
sorghum, and dried beans (except soybeans). If you are purchasing baked goods, these are typically non GMO except those with corn syrup. Your spreads, soups, sauces and canned foods can have GMO ingredients so look at the labels carefully.

In our day-to-day life of shopping for food in the various grocery stores, we typically pay little attention to what foods we buy that may be genetically engineered. Genetically Modified Foods are those that have undergone in the laboratory a process of artificially inserting genes into the DNA of foods. It sounds like science fiction, but it is here to stay! GMO’s can be engineered with genes from viruses, insects, animals, bacteria or even humans. Would you likely purchase foods labeled GMO? Americans currently purchase foods that are not labeled one way or the other. Some companies are starting to voluntarily label their products as “non-GMO” and others may include a claim to only “certain” ingredients in their products as “non-GMO”. As a rule of thumb there are four big food groups that are used in processed foods. Corn, Soy, Canola and Cotton oils. GMO Sugar beets which are used as sweeteners in candy and chocolate products are coming soon to your table!
The good news is that very few fresh fruits and vegetables are genetically modified. Corn obviously is and papaya from Hawaii is (or at least half of their crops). Meat, fish and eggs are not modified but the grains they are feed are GMO’s. Buying wild rather than farmed fish and 100% grass feed animals for meat is a better alternative.
So why the precaustions? What do we know of the long term health issues possibly associated with eating these GMO foods? Not much. We are introducing into our bodies some unnatural foods that may have some serious health issues for us later down the road. If a seed is genetically altered to withstand insects for instance, what does that food source when introduced into our bodies do? We have little compelling evidence to date to say.

Well, just when you think the worst is already here with the economy, job losses and rising prices on everything we consume and need for our survival, guess what is around the corner? Possibly food shortages???? We already are aware of the shortages taking place worldwide. Grain production was keeping up with demand until recently. Unfortunately, worldwide consumption has surpassed production in seven of the past nine years. If we don’t have the stockpiles, environmental disasters severely impact prices. The price of wheat and corn has tripled and rice has increased in price even more. The old “supply and demand” theory. Add to this climate change with shifts in temperature and precipitation, we have a disaster on our hands. Brazil is still destroying rain forest with one million acres going into “toast” annually. This conversion into farmland is not sustainable. The soil nutrients are used up and farmers move on — burning down more forest. Nothing is planted as regrowth and when it rains, it floods. What a heavy toll on our environment and the precious species, medicinal properties and plant life destroyed forever!
It is astounding when you think about it. The Consultative Group in International Agricultural Research projects that by 2050 there will be a world population close to nine billion! Since 1950 to 2009 the world has produced the largest population ever in the history of humanity! If we can’t double our current food production by 2030 we will be a hungary world and experts are doubtful that we can. It is projected that meat consumption will double by 2050.
What is the plan for our food crisis? Crop scientists employed by corporate agricultural giants like Monsanto intend to continue genetically modifiying seeds (which they patent and insist that farmers buy new seed year after year to boost their profits) which have been modified to resist insects, use less fertilizer and hold up to drought. They intend to double the yields of corn, cotton and soybeans by 2030. It is my opinion that the jury is still out on how safe genetically alternated food seed is. I have read some disturbing scientific data in opposition of genetic engineering our food in the laboratory. It is a process of artifically inserting genes into the DNA of food crops.
The poorest billion people on the planet spend 50 to 70 percent of their assets on food. Here in the United States $20.00 does not buy you but four to five items at the grocery store. The United States Post Office recently put on a food drive collecting donated food items at mailboxes to help out local food banks that cannot keep up with the demand any longer to feed our hungary here in the United States! What a dilemma!

In a recent article in Scientific American Magazine (April 2009) it was disclosed that honeybees are dying from a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder and it has wiped out large numbers of bees that pollinate one third of our crops! In a survey of beekeepers in the spring of 2008 nationwide, 36 percent of colonies were lost. A typical winter decline is usually around 15 to 25 percent. Of the 36 percent loss, 60 percent were attributed to colony collapse disorder. We never really think about how these little creatures impact our food supply chain. In California, bees are deployed in armies to pollinate almond trees in February of each year. Nearly 100 kinds of crops require pollination by honeybees. Without their work, many foods would become short in supply. Fruits, jams, jellies and even milk of all things. Dairies use alfalfa (which needs pollinators) as a protein-rich food for dairy cows.
What is also fascinating is that these diseased bees have undergone extensive autopsies by Pennsylvania State University researchers. They found more than 170 different chemicals. They also suffered from poor nutrition. Pesticides are under research to see whether certain ones can put insects under stress, even if the chemicals don’t kill them outright.
What this says to me is our constant use of chemicals in our environment is polluting and causes illness in every living thing on our planet! All the more reason to clean up your own environment the best you can through the use of organic products and foods! Many of us combat illness on many different levels and one has to ask why is it so wide spread? If we take a look at the lack of nutrients in our foods these days, it is no surprise. Our bodies need nutrients to supply energy and food to our cells which are the building blocks to maintaining our health. Younger people can go for longer periods of time eating poorly before their start seeing the affects of poor health. Older individuals are not so fortunate to have young immune systems that can be pressed to it’s limits. Organic foods are rich in nutrients and free of potent pesticides that affect our immune systems. They typically are grown in better soil that has not suffered many years of depletion of nutrients that commercial farmers grown their crops on year after year. If we look back in history, people in the United States did not live as long due to not having access to good foods to complete a diet rich in vitamins and minerals. We have come a long way in that regard with vitamins and minerals added to commercial foods. However, it is not enough. We consume too many empty calories, foods of poor nutrient value and sugar. Sugar lowers the immune system within one hour after consumption, increases insulin levels in our bodies and contributes to obesity. The solution is to eat organic whole foods. Consume vegetables, fruits, meats, fish, wheat breads, brown rice. These all contain fiber which your body can use more efficiently. new-stories-highway-blues When you start cutting out all the added calories from sugar and starchy foods, you will be surprised how much better you will feel and how much weight you can lose responsibly.

I was thinking today about how our medical technology has improved over the years with the advancement of new tests. We can check for genetic defects, scan our bodies for clogged arteries, tumors, irregularities in our organs, etc. It really is pretty amazing. We have tests approved by the FDA and tests not approved but in use today. Tests that involve quantum physics, infrared, radio frequencies, electromagnetic frequencies, etc. The big question comes when you need a diagnosis and wonder what test is the most useful. Another is, do you merge Western medicine with Eastern medicine or alternative care. For some generations of people, all they know is Western medicine and rely heavily on it for their health outcomes. Other generations seek a combination of both. It would be interesting to know what the success rates are and compare them.
All these choices can give us excellent care. Western medicine has historically used the best of technology with the use of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and pharmeceutical drugs for healing. Eastern medicine relies more on healing the body using the mind, herbal medicine, vitamin and mineral supplementation and good food nutrition, preferably organic with other techniques such as accupuncture, massage, etc. Alternative medicine uses a combination of all of these options.

We have created this blog in order to share information to the public as a health service to address health issues that many of us have. It is our belief that simply relying on physicians to cure our ailments in today’s world environment is asking a lot from physicians whom are already overburdened, underpaid and trying to financially keep their businesses profitable. The options out there for better health are many and we will talk about them.
One of the subject matters we will put a great deal of emphasis on is cancer. It is just astonishing that cancer is still accelerating in numbers unthinkable 20 years ago. They say that one out of every three men will have cancer within their lifetime and women suffer from breast cancer one in seven now. How can this be? We have spent trillions of dollars on research and we are making such small strides in a devastating disease that not just affects the patient, but friends and family also. Every single person knows someone who either has cancer or had cancer. What is this all about? How could the United States still not have permanent cures for cancer?. We have remissions, but cures? Not many when you look at the overall cancer population. Every city we drive into has huge, big cancer centers.
The multitude of diseases that people face in our society is another issue. People are really sick and getting sicker. If a physician actually gives a physical to a patient that does not have an ailment, it is really rare. We can classify obesity, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, viral infections, bacterial infections, heart attacks, infertility, the list goes on and on. What is really troubling is our youth today is not well. A certain percentage of the population has poor nutrition, exercise is almost non existent and colds, flu, childhood diseases are on the rise.
Yes, we have come up with some amazing technology for diagnosing disease and drugs to treat them. We have so many drugs on the market it is difficult to name them all. Drugs do save lives and we can be thankful for them. However, the overuse of drugs is incredible. Some patients are taking a multitude of different drugs with interactions to match. There are a lot of questions and perhaps we can get to the bottom of what is really going on! Comments are welcome and discussions will start shortly.
