In a recent article in Scientific American Magazine it was disclosed that honeybees are dying from a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder and it has wiped out large numbers of bees that pollinate one third of our crops! In a survey of beekeepers in the spring of 2008 nationwide, 36 percent of colonies were lost. A typical winter decline is usually around 15 to 25 percent. Of the 36 percent loss, 60 percent were attributed to colony collapse disorder. We never really think about how these little creatures impact our food supply chain. In California, bees are deployed in armies to pollinate almond trees in February of each year. Nearly 100 kinds of crops require pollination by honeybees. Without their work, many foods would become short in supply. Fruits, jams, jellies and even milk of all things. Dairies use alfalfa (which needs pollinators) as a protein-rich food for dairy cows.
What is also fascinating is that these diseased bees have undergone extensive autopsies by Pennsylvania State University researchers. They found more than 170 different chemicals. They also suffered from poor nutrition. Pesticides are under research to see whether certain ones can put insects under stress, even if the chemicals don’t kill them outright.
What this says to me is our constant use of chemicals in our environment is polluting and causes illness in every living thing on our planet!
